Illovo commits to Ngabu blood bank drive

The blood bank

Illovo Sugar (Malawi) plc has fulfilled its commitment to provide a fully operating blood bank to serve the people of Chikwakwa and Nsanje.

During the latter part of last year, Illovo Sugar (Malawi) plc received a request from Malawi Blood Transfusion Services (MBTS) for a blood bank to cater for Chikwawa and Nsanje districts.

The company made the MK13 Million Kwacha donation in March 2022 at a ceremony that was held at St Montfort Hospital in Nchalo.

During the event, a further request was made to the company to assist with the renovations for the room instead to be used as the blood bank storage room.

The hospital was unable to commence usage of the blood bank fridge due to unfavourable conditions of the rooms available.

The company completed the renovations works and the blood bank was officially commissioned.

The company partnered with MBTS during the event to assist with conducting a blood donation drive in order to ensure readily available blood.

MBTS also fulfilled existing blood requests from the district which allowed for the immediate use of the facilities.

The company has spent K5 million for the renovations making it a total of K18 million donation made in support of the blood bank installation.

The blood bank can hold 1,000 pints of blood and is expected to serve over 600,000 people within Ngabu and the surrounding areas.
