19 students arrested at Mayani Seconday School
Police in Dedza are keeping in custody 19 students from Mayani Secondary school suspected to have damaged school property.
Public Relations Officer for Dedza Police, sub-inspector Edward Kabango confirmed the arrest, saying the students have damaged 245 window panes and 60 chairs at the school.
Kabango added that 135 window panes at the Mayani Police unit have also been damaged by students.
The student’s protests started on Sunday night following the arrest of a 19-year-old Form III student at the school who was accused of raping a classmate aged 16.
“The students wanted to force the school authorities to initiate the release of their fellow student who was arrested for rape,” Kabango said.
The school has since been closed until further notice following the violence.
